Hello, fellow writers and readers!
There will be a treat for readers this time, because I am about to present to you my first book review! In order to be a fair critique, I thought of some certain criteria, which will be applied to every book I will be reviewing. Sooo let’s dive into them!!!
The first book we will discuss:
Trial by Fire
by Josephine Angelini
Lead character: Lily Proctor. Not gonna lie, at first she gave me such ‘pick me girl’ vibes, I really thought whether I should have even bothered to read the book. However, after the incident that occurred and became the story line of the novel, Lily totally redeemed her character. I liked a lot how the extreme events that happened to her made her realize how cool and strong she actually is. The way the author made Lily open up and develop her character due to those stressful and quite shocking adventures made me really like how Lily was portrayed as a fictional character. What also gave a good reference of the character was her message with the political background, but I will not spoil what the message was to those who haven’t read the book yet!
Chemistry with others: Well my favorite duo was Lily & Lillian. I think that Lillians character was one of the reasons why Lily had such tremendous character development in the first place. Lillian was a crazy lady, which made her story line fresh and exciting, since Lily as a person was much more down to earth (I mean as much as she was able to be *wink wink*). Next up, I obviously loved that lil enemies to lovers trope between Lily and Rowan, like how can you not stan them. I will not get into much detail here, because you should enjoy this one yourself. All I am gonna say- spicy and hot. Okay, obviously there are a lot of other characters, but the ones I truly disliked are more worth mentioning than those good ones, and they were Carrick (for obvious reasons) and the og Tristan- he was so toxic and ungrateful, and took Lily for granted. Typical men :D
Short summary: So basically Lily is a girl with a disease no doctor can diagnose. One night the disease takes over her so badly she almost dies, then a boy (Tristan) she has known her entire life breaks her heart, so she goes wondering around town and boom clap she somehow managed to jump into a parallel universe. In this universe people are able to do magic (but not the Harry Potter style lmao), which explains the disease, and the best part is that its literally a parallel universe- there is another Lily aka Lillian, other Tristan and so on. The main idea is that Lily- the chosen one (actually this part do be kinda like Harry Potter though :D) who shall save the world from ending in a brutal way. But before that she has to learn so many things about the other universe, which is mainly the plot in this book. Which leads to exciting news- YES this is a book series!!!
P.S.The sequels I will be reviewing in upcoming posts.
Book series:
1) Trial by Fire
2) Firewalker
3) Witch’s Pyre
Additional comments: Overall I loved this book, because it was the first book I truly enjoyed after a period of reader’s block. To be fair, the whole series are in Top 5 of what I have read this year. I do recommend to read this book, because it has more of young adult rather than teen story line, and has a refreshing taste to it- not the complete basic witch and wizard plot as usual (do not get me wrong- Harry Potter is the reason I want to become a writer), which also sometimes brings sentimental vibes.
Hope you enjoyed, feel free to start discussion in comments, because I am eager for that! Have a fantastic day :)
